What does being successful mean to you? And, what is it that you’re striving for? What do you want to be, do and have when you’re successful? These are all great questions that are worth answering for yourself but many people don’t take the time to really discern what it is they want out of life. Thus, they strive for some facsimile of success only to realise that they had their ladder against the wrong wall all the time. Well on this episode of The Genius Code™ podcast, I share a different take on a well-known story that is told about the fisherman and the business consultant so as to help you answer these very important questions.
In this episode, Paul Davis revisits the classic tale of the fisherman and the business consultant. The story begins with a consultant observing a fisherman who catches just enough fish each day to support his family. The consultant suggests that by fishing longer, the fisherman could catch more fish, sell the surplus, and eventually expand his operations. This expansion could lead to a fleet of boats and significant wealth. When the fisherman asks about the end goal, the consultant explains that he could then relax and enjoy life. The fisherman responds that he is already doing just that.
Additionally, this story highlights the importance of defining personal success. Many chase societal ideals without considering their true desires. It’s crucial to reflect on what brings genuine fulfillment. Is it wealth, status, or something simpler? Therefore, by understanding our own aspirations, we can avoid the trap of climbing the wrong ladder.
Paul emphasizes the need for self-awareness. He encourages listeners to identify their core values and passions. This introspection helps in setting authentic goals aligned with one’s true self. Instead of pursuing external definitions of success, focus on what resonates personally.
