The author of “Think And Grow Rich,” Napoleon Hill, said – “There is one quality which one must absolutely possess to win. And that is the definiteness of purpose. The knowledge of what one truly wants, and a burning desire to possess it.”
Years ago when I read this quote – I understood it – but I didn’t feel what Hill was referring to.
Now, I absolutely get, know, understand, and feel what it means.
You see, we can have a vision of what we want to create in our life. And we can have goals and objectives that will bring us closer to that vision – but do we have a burning desire and a purpose to achieve them?
It’s the difference between having a vision and having an inspired vision – they’re two very different things.
Many companies have vision statements, or the business owner might have a vision in their mind of what they want to achieve with their business – but it doesn’t really inspire anybody, let alone give them that inner burning desire to achieve it.
6 Questions to Find Definiteness of Purpose
So ask yourself…
- Does the vision you have for your business excite you?
- Are you “doing” your business because you have to, should do, or need to?
- Does your work fully engage you, or can you not wait till the weekend comes around?
- Does your work fulfill you and give you a sense of meaning?
- Does your vision drive and motivate you?
- Is your vision important and worthy?
In this brief assessment, how did you fare?
And if you don’t have a vision – well then that’s a whole different story altogether!
You see, your vision should conjure up positive emotions in your body. It should fill your mind and occupy the vast majority of your thoughts.
If it doesn’t, then you’re missing the vital pieces – a definiteness of purpose and a burning desire to possess it.
I know success means different things to people. For me however, success is the pursuit of the life you were born to make manifest – in other words your purpose.
And truly successful people integrate their purpose and business. It’s how they have that burning desire to attain what they want to see achieved – their vision!
Then with that, they fill their mind with the attainment of their vision.
So…
Do you have a definite purpose?
And do you have a burning desire to achieve it?
