Everyday it’s very easy to get distracted with everything that is coming at us. However without having a big picture of where we want to be heading towards, we’ll end up being bounced around like a cork on a river.
Each of us play different roles in life, be that as business owner / employee, customer / supplier, father / mother, brother / sister, son / daughter, uncle / aunt … and with each role comes different responsibilities. However, pivotal to it all is ‘ourselves’. If we don’t look after ourselves, then we’re not going to be able to give to others.
To assist you on your journey why not incorporate these six compasses into your life to ensure you keep on course with your business development.
1 – Your Vision
A vision is a statement of where you are trying to get to, not matter what role you are focusing on. It’s a picture of what it will look like in time to come. This might be two years down the track or five years or 10 years. It’s got to be able to paint a picture in your own mind of what you are trying to achieve. And a vision needs to reflect your own core values and what is important to you in your life. Ask yourself, “are you on course?”
2 – Your Values
Inside all of us is a GPS system of sorts. It sets the direction for us and it’s what guides what we do in life – these are our core values. Values are those inner rules that we work with, even though sometimes we are not even aware of them. They are what is important to us in life.
3 – Your Philosophy
What is your meaning of life? How do you want to live your life? It’s not what you say, it’s what actions you take and hence your behaviour. Why is it that you do what you do? What is your purpose and your intention behind it? This is your philosophy of life in action.
4 – Your Promise
In each of your roles in life – business leader, father, son, brother … what are you promising to deliver, to contribute, to give?
5 – Your Positioning
Are you doing what you love to do? What is it that you do exceptionally well? And are you doing it consistently? To achieve exceptional results, you need to be doing the things you do exceptionally well, simply, effectively and consistently; and doing them exceptionally.
6 – Your Engagement
How do you ‘show up’ in each of your roles? When you engage with somebody, how do you relate with that individual, do you see it from their perspective, do you communicate i.e. listen and engage, or are you distracted with your mind travelling elsewhere. In the work that you do, how much are you engaged with what you are doing? Are you consistent? If you’re not engaged, how is the relationship you are having with the other individual, or how is the project you are working on suffering?
If you’re looking to improve your productivity, the results you achieve, and creating more opportunities, then start with the above 6 compasses. If you would like some further explanation, have a look at the book “EVOLVE”.
As in life, there are many businesses that when they get past the start-up phase, manage to achieve “average” results. But who wants to be “average” when you can have extraordinary results, and be extraordinary? The only one stopping you, is you yourself. Be amazing, be passionate, be what you truly can be – as you know you can be.
